OnePlus 5: features and prices, what we know about the new “flagship killer”
The OnePlus 5 is fast approaching. Here is all that we know of the new “flagship killer” of the Chinese brand.
OnePlus amplifies its communication around OnePlus 5 by publishing a photo taken with the smartphone, asking its fans to choose its box, and by implying that the OnePlus 5 will be more compact than its predecessor. According to the latest rumors, his announcement would be scheduled in less than two weeks.
The OnePlus 5 is a highly anticipated and very mysterious smartphone, with very little information revealed. The brand has to propose a successor to the OnePlus 3T released late last year and which received a very positive reception from the fans and the press. To symbolize this generation gap, but also by superstition (the number 4 bringing misfortune in several Asian cultures), OnePlus will not come out of OnePlus 4, but directly the OnePlus 5, this information has been confirmed by the manufacturer.
Resume the design of the OnePlus 3T? If one does not know exactly what the OnePlus 5 will look like, the manufacturer has already communicated about the box in which the phone will be delivered. The brand wants to let its fans choose from 8 boxes candidates. One site published a picture of the back of what would be the OnePlus 5.
There is a smartphone strongly resembling the OnePlus 3T Midnight Edition (matte black model), but with the integration of a dual camera.
If this image shows only the back, we can still conclude some information concerning the front face. Since the back does not have a fingerprint reader, it means that OnePlus should place it on the front of the device again, as on the OnePlus 3T.
Android Authority has also released a photo of a prototype of the OnePlus 5. It looks like a OnePlus 3T design, with somewhat more generous rounding, and the use of a dual camera. According to a teasing picture published by OnePlus, one can estimate that the OnePlus 5 will be more compact than the OnePlus 3T, despite the use of a screen supposedly of the same size.
According to sketches unveiled on Weibo, the upper part of the back façade, like the Google Pixel, should take the side of the ceramic instead of the usual glass. One wondered if OnePlus would have the courage to retain the jack for the headphones, a sketch seems to indicate that this one will be present. A tweet of Carl Pei, the co-founder of OnePlus, also suggests that the jack port would be placed above the screen, not below.
Data sheet: Snapdragon 835 and dual camera OnePlus is used to distilling information on its new phones, and the OnePlus 5 is no exception. After formalizing the name of the product, the brand announced two elements of its technical sheet.
First, the OnePlus 5 will integrate a Qualcom Snapdragon 835 chip. This is the best thing about today in the mobile market, and this should guarantee the phone performance above the competition, if believed A first benchmark.
Secondly, OnePlus wants to invest specifically on the quality of the camera and will be associated with the specialist DxO. According to rumors, the brand could choose to integrate a dual photo sensor, an element more and more common on high-end smartphones.
OnePlus has released a comparative picture taken with the OnePlus 5 and another device, but it is difficult to really judge the capabilities of the new phone.
Here is the potential technical sheet for OnePlus 5:
- 5.5-inch AMOLED WQHD screen (2560 x 1440 pixels) or Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels)
- SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 64 or 128 GB of UFS 2.1
- storage 6 or 8 GB of LPDRR4 RAM
- Double 12-megapixel camera
- Dual 8-megapixel front camera Front
- fingerprint reader
- 3600 mAh battery with new version of Dash Charge
- USB Type-C
In an interview, Carl Pei, the founder of OnePlus, announced that the brand wanted to focus on the phone’s autonomy and camera.
The sketches that leaked reveal the presence of a dual photo sensor also on the front of the camera which should greatly improve the selfies. An early exit? The brand started talking about OnePlus 5 in early May. Apart from the first OnePlus that was introduced in April, the smartphones of the brand are usually presented during the summer. OnePlus began communicating around the OnePlus 5 and confirmed that the phone would be out in the summer.
It seems that the design of the smartphone is coming to an end and the manufacturer is ready to start its communication campaign. The OnePlus 3T will soon no longer be marketed and since the catalog of the brand has only one model, the manufacturer will soon announce its replacement. According to a rumor, OnePlus could formalize its new smartphone on June 15 during a conference. A rising price? The selling price is often information that does not leak in the press, so take all the rumors about it with tweezers.
The interview with Carl Pei gives some indications. He says that OnePlus sells its smartphones “at the right price” and not at low prices. One way to warn fans that the brand will no doubt increase little by little its selling prices.
If we look at the introductory prices of the different generations, it is quite clear:
- OnePlus One: 269 or 299 euros
- OnePlus 2: 339 or 399 euros
- OnePlus 3: 399 euros
- OnePlus 3T: 439 or 479 euros
It is clear that OnePlus increases its prices each generation. So one should probably expect a OnePlus 5 marketed at least 499 euros in France. According to rumors, the price of the device could rise up to 650 dollars, which would mark a very big increase compared to OnePlus 3T.
